ASC 220: Comprehensive Income

📖 Overview

ASC 220 establishes standards for reporting and presentation of comprehensive income. Comprehensive income includes net income and other comprehensive income (OCI). OCI items are those that bypass the income statement and are reported directly in equity.

🎯 Scope

Applies to all business entities that prepare financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Covers the presentation of comprehensive income and its components, including OCI items such as foreign currency translation adjustments, unrealized gains/losses on certain investments, and pension adjustments.

⚙️ Key Principles

1. Comprehensive Income = Net Income + Other Comprehensive Income (OCI).
2. OCI items include: foreign currency translation adjustments, unrealized gains/losses on available-for-sale debt securities (ASC 320), certain derivatives (cash flow hedges, ASC 815), pension and postretirement adjustments (ASC 715), and certain revaluation adjustments.
3. Presentation Options: Two-statement approach (separate income statement and OCI statement) or single-statement approach (combined statement of comprehensive income).
4. Reclassification Adjustments: Amounts reclassified from OCI to net income must be disclosed separately (or net presentation with parenthetical disclosure).

✅ Recognition

OCI items are recognized in the period they arise, bypassing the income statement. They are accumulated in a separate component of equity (Accumulated Other Comprehensive Income - AOCI). Reclassification adjustments are recognized when the underlying transaction affects net income.

📏 Measurement

OCI items are measured using the same measurement basis as the underlying transactions (e.g., fair value for AFS securities, spot rates for currency translation). No unique measurement basis is prescribed by ASC 220; it relies on other standards.

📊 Presentation

Two presentation options:
1. Two-statement approach: Present a separate income statement (showing net income) and a separate statement of comprehensive income (starting with net income and adding OCI).
2. Single-statement approach: Present a single statement of comprehensive income that includes both net income and OCI.
OCI components may be presented net of tax (with total tax disclosed) or before tax (with tax allocated).

📝 Disclosure Requirements

Disclose: The components of OCI separately (e.g., foreign currency translation, unrealized gains/losses, pension adjustments), tax effects allocated to each component (if presented before tax), reclassification adjustments (amounts reclassified from OCI to net income), accumulated OCI balance in equity (AOCI), and any changes in accounting for OCI.
